১৯৭১ সালের ২৫ মার্চ। রাত আটটা ধানমন্ডিস্থ ৩২নং সড়কের প্রবেশমুখে একটি গলিতে একটি পরিচিত রিকশা দ্রুতগতিতে এসে থামলো। যে ভবনের বাইরে এসে থেমেছে সে ভবনটি হলো শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের বাসভবন। রিকশা চালক কাশছিল এবং হাঁপাচ্ছিল। সে বললো, 'বঙ্গবন্ধুর জন্য একটি জরুরি চিরকুট নিয়ে ক্যান্টনমেন্ট থেকে রিকশা চালিয়ে এসেছি। বাংলায় লেখা স্বাক্ষরবিহীন চিরকুট বার্তাটি ছিল সংক্ষিপ্ত: "আপনার বাসভবন আজ রাতে আক্রান্ত হতে যাচ্ছে।”

সে সময়ে সেখানে যাঁরা উপস্থিত ছিলেন, তাঁদের একজন আমাকে বলেছিলেন যে, পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানী সেনাবাহিনীর আসন্ন হামলার খবর ঐ চিরকুটে তাঁরা প্রথমবারের মতো পেয়েছিলেন। সন্ধ্যার কিছুক্ষণ আগে প্রেসিডেন্ট ইয়াহিয়া খানের

কোনো পাকিস্তানী কোনো বাঙালির সঙ্গে সাক্ষাৎ করতে পারে না, কিংবা কোনো বিদেশি তা' করতে গেলে তাকে অভিযোগের মুখোমুখি হতে হয়। স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশ সরকারের প্রধানমন্ত্রী তাজউদ্দিন এরূপ উক্তি করেছিলেন। কেউ কী এই অপরিহার্য প্রশ্ন উত্থাপন করেছে অথবা আপনারা জানেন কী, এসব কী ঘটেছে? ১৯৭১ সালের এপ্রিলের মাঝামাঝি সময়ের আগে ঐ ধরনের অভিজ্ঞতা আমারও হয়েছে। শুধু আমারই বলি কেন, এ ধরনের অভিজ্ঞতা পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানী আরো ক'জনেরও হয়েছে। এঁদের মধ্যে বেশ ক'জন উঁচুদরের রাজনীতিবিদ রয়েছেন, যাঁরা ২৫ মার্চের রাতে পূর্ব বাংলায় সামরিক বর্বরতম অত্যাচার সংঘটনের পর বিদেশে গিয়েছেন তাদের সকলকেই

At about 8 P.M. on 25 March 1971, an unidentified cycle rickshaw hastily pulled into the lane leading to 32 Dhanmandi and came to a halt outside Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's Dacca residence.
