FREEDOM TO PUBLISH
Author: J. A. Koutchoumow
"Thought must never submit,
To a dogma, a party,
A passion, an interest,
A preconceived idea, or anything whatsoever,
Apart from the facts themselves,
Since, for it,
To submit would be to cease to exist".
This quotation from the mathematician Henri Poincaré is a perfect description of what publishing should and should not be. The publisher knows that no intellectual theory, no interest and no passion of the human heart can understand and encompass the richness and diversity of the individual, of persons and of humanity.
The container "humanity" is always vaster than the content "intellectual". systems or impulses of the heart".
This is why no one should be imposed a dogma, a party, a passion, an interest, an idea or anything whatsoever other than facts.
The corner-stone of freedom of thought, freedom of oral or written expression and freedom of assembly is to be found in the infinite richness and diversity of the human spirit which is always seeking to improve and surpass itself.
Any person is always superior to any systems, dogmas, parties, interests or passions. It is with this certitude that authors and publishers find the energy and the will to propagate new ideas, new works, new writings, new research and new investigations. They know that there are no immutable truths established for all eternity and superior to persons.
All dogmas and all ideas are partial, limited and therefore in-complete - yet to be completed, and in-just- to be brought closer to justice.
Truth and justice are ideals towards which we strive but which we are far from having attained.
They were not attained 2.500, 2.000 or 1.500 years ago, during the last century or yesterday, nor have they been attained even today.
Truth and justice are always in the future, perhaps the day after tomorrow. We know, however, by experience that what were the truths of the day after tomorrow have turned out to be errors later on, the errors of past centuries or of yesterday.
We must constantly remind the politicians and the moralists that they may well have only a partial and blinkered view of issues and persons.
This is where authors, artists, journalists, publishers and, in my opinion, the younger, rising generation make a contribution to society. They offer a fresh approach, a new outlook and another standpoint that puts currently prevailing views into proper perspective, call accepted situations into question and expose rigid and hidebound attitudes.
Nothing is in greater conformity with the nature of thought and publishing than to review all dogmas, all courses of action, passions, interests and ideas, without ever giving up the quest and without ever making a final commitment to one or other of these expressions of the mind or the heart. Like thought itself, publishing is manifold, varied, pluralist, contradictory, critical and controversial.
At the risk of losing its raison d'être, publishing cannot submit to any preconceived idea, nor to anything else, since it is a real expression of life, thought and
